FAQ:s about Psychoeducational/Learning Disability Assessment: When should you or your child undergo psycho educational assessment? What is the difference between Screening and Diagnostic testing? What happens in the psycho educational assessment? Do I need to do anything before testing? When should you or your child undergo psycho educational or Learning Disability assessment? A student should be tested when the student himself, his parent or his teachers think that his or her performance at school is significantly below what is expected for student’s age, and level of intelligence. Both children and adults can be tested. Another common reason for psycho educational assessment is that parents or teacher’s believe that the child is gifted and might benefit from a more challenging curriculum. What is the difference between Screening and Diagnostic testing? In order to administer screening tests, one does not have to be licensed psychologists, but they can be given by, for example, educational staff. These tests cannot determine the presence of learning disability or ADHD but can be used to determine whether the student should be referred for diagnostic testing. Diagnostic tests, such as learning disability assessment, on the other hand, must be conducted by a licensed Doctor of Clinical Psychology, or under the direct supervision of such person. Only diagnostic testing, can tell us whether the student has a learning disability, or ADHD. Many tutoring services are offering only screening tests. The Brain Station Tutoring Services is offering complete psychoeducational testing conducted by Ph.D:s of Psychology. What happens in the psycho educational assessment? Before psychoeducational assessment we typically ask the parents or teachers to provide us some background information. This might include standardized questionnaires on child’s development and some questions on chil’s medical history and how well the student has succeeded in the academic settings. During the three assessment sessions, we investigate students’ academic achievement levels in different subjects such as reading, writing, or mathematics. We also investigate students’ general intelligence, attention and memory functions, as well as his or her social and emotional development. Test of study skills and habits is also included in this assessment. The testing takes 6-9 hours and is usually split into three sessions. With adults and older children, it is possible to complete testing in only two sessions but we don’t recommend it, since this might have an effect on the results. In addition to these sessions, Brain Station Tutoring Services is likely to ask family members, teachers, and the student himself to complete some questionnaires concerning student Do I need to do anything before testing?
